SMS remains a powerful channel for customer engagement but it is increasingly targeted by fraudsters. One common tactic is SMS smishing, where attackers impersonate trusted brands using fake sender names to trick recipients into clicking malicious links or sharing sensitive data. The SMS Sender ID Registry is one central measure to support secure message traffic; here is how it works and how iBASIS Business Messaging supports it.
What Is a Sender ID and Why Does it Matter?
A Sender ID is the name or number that appears as the sender of an SMS message. Enterprises often use alphanumeric Sender IDs (e.g., “YourBank” or “RetailCo”) to make messages recognizable and trustworthy. These IDs can be spoofed by fraudsters to impersonate legitimate businesses.
COIN’s SMS Sender ID Registry: A Smishing Prevention Initiative
To address this growing issue, the Collective Operator Information Network (COIN) in The Netherlands has launched the SMS Sender ID Registry. This initiative, supported by Dutch mobile operators and messaging providers, helps to:
- Validate legitimate Sender IDs
- Block fraudulent or lookalike IDs
- Filter suspicious messages before delivery
Enterprise participation is fundamental to the success of this fraud prevention effort. By registering their official Sender IDs and nominating lookalike IDs for proactive blocking, brands directly safeguard consumer trust and protect their own reputation from criminal impersonation.
As of November 4, 2025, COIN began actively blocking unregistered Sender IDs, following a successful pilot program from 2021 to 2025. The registry operates using:
- Permit Lists: Verified and trusted Sender IDs
- Deny Lists: Lookalike or typosquatted IDs to significantly reduce fraud
Note: While it was initially focused on banking, COIN has now expanded eligibility to any legal entity, allowing industries such as retail, healthcare, and logistics to register their Sender IDs and protect their customers.
